Training Preparation
How you prepare for training matters. Turning up ready to work, with a focus in mind, makes a big difference.
Why it matters
Turn experience into useful evidence.
Training preparation is everything that happens before you step onto the pitch. Most players think preparation starts with the warm-up. In reality, it starts the night before.
Sleep, nutrition, and hydration all affect how you perform in training. If you stayed up late, skipped breakfast, or arrived dehydrated, you are starting at a disadvantage. None of that is complicated, but it requires thinking about training before you get there.
The mental side of preparation matters just as much. Arriving at training with a specific focus changes the quality of your session. Instead of going through the motions, you have something to work on. Maybe it is your weak foot, or your movement off the ball, or communicating more with teammates. Having that focus means you get more out of every drill and every exercise.
This does not need to be a big ritual. Before you leave the house, ask yourself one question: what do I want to be better at by the end of this session? Write it down or set it as an intention in PlayReflect so you have a specific focus to revisit afterwards.
After training, compare what you planned to work on with what actually happened. Did you stick to your focus? Did something else take priority? That feedback loop between preparation and reflection is where real development happens. The players who prepare well get more out of every session, and it compounds over time.
Your reflection
Start with what actually happened
Answer honestly, not perfectly.
- 01
Did I have a clear focus going into training today?
- 02
Was I physically ready (sleep, food, hydration)?
- 03
Did I give full effort from the first minute?
- 04
What could I do before training to help me get more out of it?
Turn the lesson into a plan
Reflect while the detail is still fresh.
PlayReflect guides your thinking and helps you notice patterns across your development.
Keep developing
Post-Training Reflection
How to think about what happened after training. What went well, what was tough, and what to work on next time.
Tracking My Progress
Keep an honest record of how you are developing as a player. Notice improvements, be real about what still needs work.
Tactical Understanding
Understanding your role in the team, how formations work, and reading the game. Smart players think as well as play.
