Handling Pressure

Pressure comes from lots of places: matches, parents, coaches, teammates, and yourself. Learning to deal with it is part of growing up in sport.

Why it matters

Turn experience into useful evidence.

Pressure is part of sport. It comes from wanting to win, from knowing people are watching, from worrying about making mistakes, and sometimes from expectations that feel too heavy. Every player feels it. The difference is how you respond.

Some pressure is useful. A bit of nerves before a match sharpens your focus and gives you energy. That is your body getting ready to perform. The problem comes when pressure tips into anxiety, when you feel so tense that you cannot think clearly or enjoy playing. If that is happening regularly, it is worth paying attention to.

The first step in handling pressure is identifying where it comes from. Is it internal? Are you setting impossible standards for yourself and beating yourself up when you fall short? Or is it external? Are parents, coaches, or teammates putting expectations on you that feel unfair or overwhelming? Often it is a mix of both, but knowing the source helps you figure out what to do about it.

Simple techniques work. Breathing exercises before a match calm your nervous system. Focusing on one small task at a time, rather than the whole 90 minutes, keeps your mind from racing. Having a reset word or action that brings you back to the present when your thoughts spiral. These are all practical tools that elite athletes use regularly.

PlayReflect encourages you to record how you felt before and during games. Over several entries, you start to see what triggers your pressure and what helps you manage it. That self-knowledge is powerful. A player who understands their own stress response has a genuine advantage.
